The Network Behind Nextstep

Host Institutions

The Nextstep Host Institutions represent a network of world-class research infrastructures and academic centers dedicated to fostering innovation and scientific excellence.

Central to this network are ESRF and ILL, co-located on the European Photon and Neutron Campus in Grenoble, France, offering unmatched opportunities for collaboration through their proximity and complementary expertise. Joining them is eDREAM, a distributed research infrastructure specializing in advanced electron microscopy, providing PhD students access to cutting-edge analytical techniques across Europe.

Together, these institutions empower doctoral candidates with state-of-the-art facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the tools to tackle the most pressing challenges in science and sustainability.

European Distributed Research Infrastructure for Advanced Electron Microscopy is a distributed RI network of which three nodes, Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ, Germany, 4 DCs), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Norway, 1 DC) and AREA Science Park (AREA, Italy, 1 DC), will participate as implementing partners.

Programme Management

Operational Structure

The programme is coordinated by the ESRF but managed jointly by the ESRF and ILL. UGA is our partner for student training, and is also a partner in many of the PhD projects. Partners within the PhD projects included companies and universities in 14 countries.
